Short student introduction - Mats

Hi there!

Education
I'm a native Oslo-boy named Mats coming out of the University Of Life Sciences (UMB) in Ås. I was enrolled there in a 5 year master program for landscape architecture, of which I finished 3 years (equivalent of a bachelor), before switching to AHO for the 2 year master program. The third year at UMB I specialized in design and detail - including amongst other things a subject on constructional design and some 3D visualization (mainly Sketchup).

More than anything I am driven by the still rather 'untapped' and sorely needed dimension of sustainability in landscape architecture and the potential for a successful 'symbiosis' between ecology, aesthetics and function - with ecological concern as a prerequisite. That being said, I have at this point little experience with the field of sustainable design (as UMB didn't offer much on this), but I'm looking forward to exploring it further in the coming 2 years!

Personal
Some of the things I enjoy in my spare time is music, science literature, training, nature and living the urban life... Also, I don't mind having a cold beer (or several) now and then ;-).

Project

Because the 3 years at UMB was not technically a bachelor degree I do not have a specific 'grand' thesis to present, but here is a small preview of something I did during the final semester: (an urban meeting place/park/traffic junction solution)

EMERGING URBAN TERRITORIES

The course studies emerging urbanized fields in the Oslo region, specifically investigating a sample of territory enclosed between the city of Lillestrøm and Gardermoen airport. Projects will explore the relationship between landscape, infrastructures and urban development in order to unveil the potential for new landscape and architectural transformations. The course shall develope operative parameters for Landscape architecture based on the contextual and site specific characteristics, and hence inform individual projects for the design of new landscape, infrastructural and architectural structures.
